Cardboard to Art - Repurpose your Imagination

Free Event :Cardboard City in Santa Monica


This summer, reDiscover Center is partnering with the City of Santa Monica, along with many prominent artists and designers to present “Cardboard City,” an innovative, Pop-Up Community Art Center, which will be located at 1231 Third St. Promenade. This fantastical event will be up and running until August 29.


Using a free and easily accessible material such as cardboard is a great way to teach children of all ages about sustainability when making and creating. 


This free public event takes place in "gigantic" (10,000 sq ft.) space and has an incredible amount to offer:


  • Museum-style exhibitions of large scale cardboard sculptures and architectural models, curated and constantly added to by artists-in-residence

  • Family art activities introducing youth and adults to cardboard crafting techniques and inspiring artmaking using sustainable materials

  • Schedule of fee-based, inexpensive summer classes for youth and adults

  • The “Cardboard City Shop,” selling tools and materials so families can make art at home


reDiscover Center is also sponsoring 8-25 artists’ residencies, supporting local and nationally prominent artists working in cardboard. They are partnering with the City of Santa Monica’s Dept. of Sustainability to ensure all unused materials are recycled.


This is a wonderful, family-friendly opportunity which is free, sustainable and creative (plus, you get to take home all of the cardboard creations you make!) And — THEY’RE BACK!!! The UC/CE LA COUNTY MASTER GARDENERS are returning to the Mar Vista Farmers Market!! They’ll be there from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on SUNDAY, JULY 11.

Beginning next month, AUGUST 1st, they will be a regular guest at The Green Tent on the FIRST SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH !!!

As usual, they’ll have seeds (VERY LIMITED, only one packet per family) and SEEDLINGS to give away FREE!  This month they’re heavy on herbs (basil, spearmint, oregano) but there are some bell peppers and tomatoes and a couple of mystery plants they couldn’t identify. 

And they’re available to answer your garden questions! MGs offer help even when they’re not at the market; email mglosangeleshelpline@ucdavis.edu with a description of your concern or question. Attaching photos will help the Master Gardener diagnose the problem. OR, you can phone in your concern or question by leaving a detailed message at (626) 586-1988.

We Were Made for These Times

An excerpt from the poem by Clarrisa Pinkola Estes:

 Do not lose heart.  We were made for these times.

I have heard from so many recently who are deeply and
properly bewildered.  They are concerned about the state of
affairs in our world right now.  It is true, one has to be 
strong to withstand much of what passes for "good" in our 
culture today.  Abject disregard of what the soul finds most 
precious and irreplaceable and the corruption of principled
ideals have become "the new normal".
Ours is a time of almost daily jaw-dropping astonishment
and often righteous rage over the latest degradations of what
matters most to civilized, visionary people.  The lustre and
hubris some have aspired to while endorsing acts so heinous
against children, elders, everyday people, the poor, the 
unguarded, the helpless...is breathtaking.
Yet, I urge you, ask you, to please not spend your spirit dry
by bewailing these difficult times.  Especially do not lose 
hope.  The fact is--we were made for these times.
Yes for years we have learning, practicing, been in 
training for and just waiting to meet on this exact plain
of engagement.  I cannot tell you often enough that we
are definitely the leaders we have been waiting for and that we 
have been raised, since childhood, for this time precisely.
One of the most important steps you can take to help calm 
the storm is to not allow yourself to be taken in a flurry of
overwrought emotion or despair - thereby accidentally contributing
to the swale and the swirl.  Ours is not the task of fixing
 the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to 
mend the part of the world that is within our reach.

350.org comes to the Westside

The Climate Crisis Won't Stop for Corona


And Neither Will We!


TONIGHT,  Tuesday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m. is the first monthly meeting of the Westside LA Hub of Socal350.org.   Please join and invite others on the Westside who are concerned about the climate crisis. RSVP to the Zoom meeting here!

If anything is clear, it is that there are many links between our current pandemic and the slow but steady destruction of our ecosystems.  It is easy to lose hope, but there are many ways to be part of the solution.  SoCal 350 Climate Action has been active in Southern California since 2013 and starting today, we will have our own Westside chapter. 

The first Westside LA Hub meeting is tonight, May 5, at 7:00 p.m. (via Zoom, further event details below) 

350.org derives its name from 350 parts per million, the amount of carbon in the atmosphere that would allow the Earth to continue supporting life as we know it.  We are well into the 400's now, but in the past few years, we have gained a better understanding of how we can reverse global warming.  (For more information, check out Drawdown.org) 

All levels of 350.org - international, national, and local, have at their core the same mission.  They organize, activate, and engage across class, gender, racial, and ethnic lines to build a mass movement for a healthy climate and a 100% clean energy future with full employment.

SoCal 350 has organized public demonstrations about the climate crisis and worked on campaigns to stop neighborhood oil drilling in Los Angeles, close the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility, promote fossil fuel divestment by closing the "money pipeline", and many more.
"Our goal is to help Southern California transition away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible while creating a more equitable society with abundant jobs, housing, and green space for all our residents." -SoCal 350 Westside LA Hub
In order to reach more people and accelerate its work during this critical year, SoCal 350 is starting a new local hub on the Westside. Despite the coronavirus forcing all activism online, they decided it made sense to initiate a local group because the climate crisis hasn't become any less critical during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Return of the Rake!

Happy Autumn! Leaves have started to fall and many of us are enjoying the brilliant oranges, reds and yellows as we walk or drive through our neighborhoods. If you are a composter, you know the value of these little bigs of carbon. They prevent the compost pile from smelling like poop. Not a composter? Then you or your gardener can rake them into a pile and toss them in the green bin provided by the city. So where does a leaf blower fit into this process? That is what we will be talking about at the Mar Vista Green Tent this Sunday, November 27.

Want to make a difference right now?  

Discontinue your own leaf-blowing activity.  Instead, have your gardener rake and then compost the leaves on or put them in the green bin.  And for God's sake, share this with your neighbors!

Below are some of the reasons to discontinue the use of blowers in case you are short on facts..  

"Fun" Facts

  • 1.2 billion gallons of gas are burned in lawn and garden equipment in the United States annually.

  • Toxic gas & oil, carcinogenic emissions, noxious exhaust, and unsafe noise levels make gas-powered lawn care a very hazardous job — particularly for unprotected lawn crews working full-time at the source of emissions and noise. Workers may have few options and little agency.

  • Ground level ozone (formed by VOCs and NOx in the presence of sunlight) and fine particulate matter cause and contribute to early death, stroke, heart attack, congestive heart failure, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cancer.

  • The ongoing fueling and maintenance necessary with gas lawn machines results in huge amounts of extra waste in our landfills.

  • Harsh chemical solvents are used to degrease and clean carburetors, spark plugs, fuel and air filters, and decks of gas-powered machines. These elements end up evaporating into the air, poured into the soil, or washed down a drain.

  • Gas emissions degrades air, soil & water. It affects neighborhood quality of life and contributes to climate change

Now that many of you are working from home, you may be more aware of the frequency with which these menaces are operated.  Let's use this break from business as usual to fix some of our long-standing health and environmental issues.

This is one of the most non-boring ways to learn about the importance and ease of prioritizing solar energy and helping you make a cleaner tomorrow.

Join us this Sunday at the Mar Vista Farmer’s Market to find out about the upcoming Mar Vista Music & Art Walk.  Our mission has always been to encourage community members to stroll their sidewalks and explore their neighborhood “Main Street”, Venice Blvd. Now over 5 years later, our completely free Art Walk continues to bring lovers of all the arts together to support one another and the community. 
Taking place on March 7th is “Green Dreams” Art Walk, a celebration of sustainability and all things eco-friendly! Along the one-mile stretch of Venice Blvd., between Inglewood Blvd. and Lyceum Ave., urban farming, local produce and plants, art made from recycled materials, and low or no-waste products will be highlighted at this event.

The UC/CE LA County Master Gardeners are back at The Green Tent from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, with some greens, herbs and snap peas to share with you for FREE.

Come by with your gardening questions, and pick up a free plant (lovingly grown for you by the Master Gardeners) and some free seeds, while they last.




The Master Gardeners also emphasize the incursion of the ACP (Asian Citrus Psyllid) and the disease it carries, Huanglong Bing, and their destructive impact on our backyard citrus. The disease is here. And there’s no cure. This Sunday February 16th, at the Green Tent, representing The Learning Garden , David King, The Gardenmaster, will have some free seeds and information on upcoming Learning Garden events!

You can find The Learning Garden online at http://www.thelearninggarden.org/ - with our calendar of events and classes we will offer through-out the year.  

The Learning Garden provides the vision of a community growing some of their own food and using plants as a vital part of our lives. We are the home base for the Seed Library of Los Angeles, Westside Produce Exchange and many other groups. The Garden frequently has classes on gardening  - including some specialty classes like pickling, grafting and other garden centered skills.

The Garden has suffered badly over this last year as Venice High School (where our Garden is located) constructs a new building. We know we have a hard road ahead to restore the garden to something even better than we were in the past!

Join us on Sunday, November 9 at the Mar Vista Green Tent for our guest: Los Angeles Audubon Society.

The Los Angeles Audubon Society has taught local school children about the Ballona Wetlands since 1991. Every year, 2500 students have the opportunity to visit this special place and see the plants and animals that make Ballona their home. 

According to the Drawdown data, coastal wetland ecosystems are one of the top 100 solutions for reversing Global Warming. Relative to their land area, they sequester huge amounts of carbon in plants aboveground and in roots and soils below. Coastal wetlands can store five times as much carbon as tropical forests over the long term, mostly in deep wetland soils!

A project planned by the State of California will bring serious changes to the existing habitat. The Los Angeles Audubon would love to share more information about the future of the wetlands. Stop by the Green Tent this Sunday to learn more about programs that inspire our future conservationists and what you can do to keep Ballona thriving!

Learn about the outdoor education programs sponsored by the Los Angeles Audubon Society that bring the children of Los Angeles to remnant wild and natural places that are found amid our big city. They work with all age groups, from elementary to high school, striving to show and educate field trip participants that nature still exists in our own back yard and the importance of our local ecosystems. Programs are keyed to Next Generation Science Standards, and support curriculum being taught in the classroom.

Approximately 3,500 school children every year, at the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve and Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, engage in hands-on activities that include using binoculars to view local birds and other wildlife, scientific illustration exercises where they take a close up view of local flowers and invertebrates and record their observations through drawing, and hiking through open spaces. 

In addition, the Audobon Society hosts a monthly Open Wetlands at the Ballona Ecological Reserve to reach a broader audience, and allow access to a reserve that is usually closed to the public. Stop by the Green Tent this Sunday to find out how you can participate.
